Expensive sports and exercises? No, it doesn’t have to be! Even if you have less to spend, there are plenty of ways to keep your health intact. I’ll list the cheap and free options for you!
- Your own mat
A mat or just your own towel, that’s all you need to do various fitness exercises at home. Simply, in the attic or in your living room. Think of abdominal exercises, push-ups, burpees, and lunges. Turn on some music and exercise. Would you rather get some outside help or motivation? You can follow workouts for free on YouTube. I recommend the 7-minute workout: ideal if you have little time and still want to exercise effectively.
2. Resistance band
You probably know them, those elastics with which you can train your muscles. Such a resistance band is indeed a handy gadget and the good news: they only cost a few pounds. For example, you can buy five pieces online for a tenner. What can you do with such an elastic? Tie it to the leg of your couch and pull the strap up with your legs, or train your shoulders by pulling the ends apart. More inspiration? There are countless videos with examples online, and you guessed it: for free.
3. Kitchen towel
Who would have thought: training with a kitchen towel? Yes, you can. It’s a matter of rolling up your kitchen towel and using it, for example, to train your arm muscles. You can often find how to do that exactly on YouTube under the term ‘work-out towel’.
4. Use your body
Many sports equipment nowadays costs next to nothing – think of weights or a kettlebell. But still: add everything together and you’re still a few pounds further. If you really don’t want to spend money but do want to exercise, don’t underestimate your own body weight. You can go a long way with the aforementioned abdominal exercises, squats, and planking.
5. Running
Shoes on and go: the great thing about running is that you can do it at any time of the day, you’re not tied to gym times and it’s therefore free – except for the purchase of shoes and sportswear. Do you find it difficult to keep up, or boring running on your own? Of course, you can ask your girl/boyfriend, brother/sister, or neighbour to run along with you, but there are also apps that can help you. You get audio guidance, you can choose running music and you can see how much you’ve run and the calories you’ve burned. Of course, such apps also contain options for which you have to pay, but they’re basically free and then there are plenty of tools that you can use. Examples of apps are RunKeeper, Strava, and Runtastic.
6. Garden work
Spring is here, so that also means it’s time to take care of your garden. Bending down, getting up, weeding: that’s hard work. But you do use all your muscles and you’re outside – especially nice when the weather outside is lovely. Do you not have a garden, but do you want to keep busy? Then a vegetable garden might be something for you – lasts for several seasons and you’re left with tasty and healthy food too.
7. Jumping rope
Oh, how many times we used to jump rope in the schoolyard. Strange that you see it so little these days. And jumping rope is good for everything, from your bones to your heart. You can buy a simple rope for a few pounds and you’ll enjoy it for years to come – a good investment.
